The activities carried out as part of this work comprised:
- Comprehensive site visits to Río Hondo, Escaba and Batiruana dams, including the inspection of their facilities and the review of all technical documentation relating to the structures.
- Modelling of the structural and stress–strain behaviour of Río Hondo Dam, including dynamic analysis under seismic loading using FLAC software.
- Qualitative risk analysis, comprising the identification and classification of the failure modes associated with Río Hondo, Escaba and Batiruana dams.
- Quantitative risk analysis, comprising the development of risk models using iPresas Calc software. These models enabled the quantitative estimation of the individual and total risks associated with Río Hondo and Escaba dams, including both societal and economic consequences. The results were compared against international risk tolerability recommendations, and different investment alternatives for improving dam safety were assessed and prioritised, including an analysis of residual risk.
- Preparation of a report presenting the results obtained and proposing risk reduction measures for Río Hondo and Escaba dams.
- Preparation of a final report presenting the results obtained for Río Hondo, Escaba and Batiruana dams, together with a proposal for the joint prioritisation of measures.
