iPresas participates in the 2nd International Symposium on Tailings Deposits – Hermosillo 2026 with a pre-symposium course on risk-based management

iPresas participated in the 2nd International Symposium on Tailings Deposits – Hermosillo 2026, held from 11 to 13 March in Hermosillo, Sonora, with a course delivered by our team focused on risk-based tailings dam management. The event, organised by the Mexican Society for Geotechnical Engineering — SMIG —, brought together national and international specialists to address the main technical challenges associated with the planning, design, construction, operation, closure and management of tailings deposits.

As part of the pre-conference course programme, iPresas delivered the workshop “Risk-Based Tailings Dam Management”, a training session aimed at strengthening decision-making in tailings dam safety through semi-quantitative risk analysis methodologies.

The session was delivered by Adrián Morales-Torres, who led a practical and participatory workshop based on the simulation of a real risk analysis workshop. Through individual and group exercises, real-time voting, technical discussion and the review of real case studies, participants were able to work through the key steps of an SQRA methodology applied to tailings dams.

The main topics covered during the course included the identification and analysis of potential failure modes — PFMA —, semi-quantitative risk classification — SQRA —, the consolidation and prioritisation of recommendations, and the definition of actions aimed at strengthening governance and risk-based safety.

In addition to the pre-symposium course, Adrián Morales Torres, Managing Partner at iPresas, participated in the technical programme of the 2nd International Symposium on Tailings Deposits – Hermosillo 2026 with the presentation “Application of Risk Analysis Methodologies to Tailings Dams: Practical Challenges and Lessons Learned”, delivered on 12 March 2026.

During his presentation, Adrián Morales shared iPresas’ experience in the practical application of risk analysis methodologies to tailings dams, highlighting the main technical challenges, lessons learned and the importance of integrating these approaches into decision-making, the prioritisation of measures and the continuous improvement of safety in tailings storage facilities.

iPresas’ participation in this symposium reinforces its commitment to transferring specialised technical knowledge and promoting advanced approaches for the safe, sustainable and responsible management of tailings dams. Through this type of initiative, iPresas contributes to the development of best practices in the mining sector and to strengthening a safety culture based on analysis, evidence and risk-informed management.
