The IDB publishes the Methodological Guide for Failure Mode Identification Workshops with the contribution of iPresas: a commitment to risk management in critical infrastructure

At iPresas, we work every day with the conviction that safer and more resilient infrastructure management starts with a sound understanding of risks. In this regard, we are pleased to share the publication of the Methodological Guide for the Implementation of Failure Mode Identification Workshops, a document prepared by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), to which iPresas had the privilege of contributing by providing our technical knowledge and experience in risk analysis. The guide is now publicly available in the IADB’s digital library.

This guide is part of a joint effort between the IDB and iPresas to strengthen institutional capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean in the area of critical infrastructure risk analysis. The methodology presented is based on our extensive experience in designing and facilitating technical workshops that enable the structured and participatory identification of failure modes that may affect key infrastructure such as dams, roads, power generation facilities or flood protection works.

Through a practical and adaptable approach, the guide proposes a clear sequence of steps for preparing, conducting and documenting workshops in which failure modes are identified and prioritised, with the participation of operators, technical staff, institutional representatives and other relevant stakeholders. The aim is to foster a shared understanding of risks and provide a solid basis for informed decision-making in investment, operation and maintenance projects.

The publication reflects the IDB’s commitment to resilience and sustainability in infrastructure development, as well as iPresas’ commitment to sharing applied technical knowledge in real-world contexts. It is a useful tool for public institutions, consultants, infrastructure operators and design and planning teams alike.

Supporting documents: catalogues by infrastructure type

As a complement to the methodological guide, a series of reference catalogues by infrastructure type have also been published. These documents serve as practical support for identifying failure modes in each specific sector, offering common examples and facilitating workshop development.

The available catalogues are:

These documents support the technical preparation of the workshops, enabling participating teams to work from a common information base that can be easily adapted to local risks and characteristics.

A further step in our commitment to risk management

At iPresas, we would like to thank the IDB for placing its trust in our technical team to lead the development of this guide and the supporting catalogues. This collaboration has been an opportunity to share our experience and reinforce a shared vision: safer and more resilient infrastructure is possible when solid methodologies and committed teams are brought together.
