The project aimed to define solutions to control and reduce the risk of the effect of floods caused by extreme events in the lower area of the Yuna River Valley in the Dominican Republic. The work carried out was carried out based on the knowledge and inputs generated in the study Development of risk assessment and management documents in support of the DR-L1161 Program “Draft management plan for the Yuna River basin” of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). As part of the activities carried out during the project, the following stand out:
- Analysis and compilation of information and previous studies.
- Hydraulic modelling. Two-dimensional hydraulic modeling was carried out in the study area, that is, from the Yuna River at the height of Villa Riva to its mouth, for a wide range of flows.
- Pre-design of alternatives. Based on the results of the hydraulic model, alternative solutions were proposed to control and reduce the risk of the flood effect in the main affected populations in the lower Yuna River Valley.
- Cost-benefit evaluation. To this end, the estimation of the consequences in economic and social terms that would occur both in the scenario of the current condition of the hydraulic system and in the scenario with the implementation of the proposed flood threat mitigation works was carried out.
