This project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021–2027). Its overall objective is to develop a methodology for identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with mine tailings dams to prevent failures.
The resulting risk calculation and analysis methodology will provide valuable information to support safety management decisions, serving as a tool to prevent failures at any stage of a project’s life cycle that could lead to catastrophic consequences.
The project’s specific technical objectives include:
Design a reliable and effective methodology that addresses all variables that may affect tailings dam infrastructure.
Determine the probability of each failure mode through the most accurate estimation possible.
Integrate the probability of load occurrence, system response, and consequences using influence diagrams within a graphical interface.
Design a tool for benchmarking against international standards.
Study and develop risk models that incorporate all available information on the tailings dam system to calculate failure probabilities and their consequences.
Design and develop potential combinations of risk reduction measures for dams.
