Review and update of the designs for the flood protection works proposed for Walter Thilo Deininger Park, within the framework of the Coastal-Marine Tourism Development Programme. The consultancy sought to assess the performance, functionality and safety of the proposed solutions and to develop recommendations to reduce potential future problems.
The work included compiling and reviewing the studies previously undertaken by the IDB and the technical documentation relating to the proposed flood mitigation works. The hydrological and hydraulic models used during the design process were also tested to assess the hydraulic performance of the interventions under the flood scenarios considered.
As part of the project, iPresas designed and facilitated a Failure Mode Identification Workshop in San Salvador with the participation of the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and the Salvadoran Tourism Institute (ISTU). Through group working sessions, the participants identified and assessed potential mechanisms that could affect the performance and effectiveness of the flood protection works.
Based on the conclusions of the Workshop, the designs were reviewed using a two-dimensional hydraulic model, and a quantitative risk assessment model was developed. The results supported recommendations to modify and optimise the proposed works, minimise potential operational deficiencies and improve the protection of the park against future flood events.
