Review of Flood Mitigation Works in the Rocha River Basin for IDB – 2019

Review and update of the designs for a representative sample of the works proposed to mitigate flood risk in the Rocha River basin, within the framework of the Bolivia Climate Resilience Programme. The project sought to assess the proposed solutions and the risk studies underpinning their design, while also considering the influence of different climate change scenarios.

The work included compiling and conducting a detailed review of the available documentation, analysing the types of works proposed and assessing potential complementary interventions at conceptual level to support an integrated approach to risk reduction in the Rocha River sub-basin.

As part of the project, iPresas designed and facilitated a Failure Mode Identification Workshop in Cochabamba involving the relevant stakeholders. The sessions examined potential mechanisms that could affect the performance and effectiveness of the flood protection works. The identified failure modes were subsequently classified to determine the need for additional studies, design improvements and complementary measures.

Based on the results, recommendations were developed to prevent the identified failure modes or reduce their potential effects on both the infrastructure and the flood risk management system. The work supported the proposal, at pre-feasibility level, of modifications and complementary interventions intended to improve the effectiveness of the works and strengthen the basin’s resilience to future extreme events.
