The work carried out by iPresas in the Sula Valley (Honduras), as part of a project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), has been published in RIBAGUA – Ibero-American Journal of Water, available through the Taylor & Francis platform.
The article presents part of the work undertaken to analyse and improve flood risk management in one of Central America’s most flood-prone regions. The Sula Valley is home to significant industrial, agricultural and economic activity, as well as a large population exposed to extreme hydrometeorological events.
The project provided a real-world opportunity to translate the risk analysis principles promoted by the IDB into practical technical and operational criteria for planning flood risk reduction measures.
A Case Focused on Flood Risk
The study evaluates flood risk in the Sula Valley through an approach that combines hydraulic modelling, exposure analysis, consequence assessment and the prioritisation of mitigation measures, integrating all these elements within a risk analysis framework as the backbone of the decision-making process.
This methodology makes it possible to better understand where risk is concentrated, identify the areas most exposed to flooding and prioritise the actions that provide the greatest reduction in risk.
Applied Research for Real-World Challenges
The published work reflects the way iPresas approaches these types of projects by combining technical analysis, hydraulic modelling tools and prioritisation criteria to support informed decision-making.
In a region such as the Sula Valley, where floods have caused significant social and economic impacts, having clear and structured information is essential for planning investments, improving emergency preparedness and strengthening territorial resilience.
Published in RIBAGUA
The publication of this case study in RIBAGUA helps disseminate a practical application of flood risk analysis and management developed by iPresas in Honduras.
