Flood study of the Porcelanosa Grupo Industrial Complex (Castellón, Spain) for Porcelanosa SAU

The project consisted of the study of the flooding situation of the Porcelanosa Group’s Industrial Complex in the industrial estate of Vila-real (Castellón). The following tasks were carried out:

  • The basins of contributions to the plots and study area have been identified, and the maximum flows that originate in these basins have been obtained. This has been done based on the maximum flows published by MITECO and extracted in this case from the official CAUMAX application, extrapolating them through statistical adjustment to return periods higher than the normative ones (T500 years).
  • A two-dimensional hydraulic model of the Veo River and the surrounding areas was developed to quantify the extent of the flood, as well as the basic characteristics of the flow (depth and velocity) at each point of the study area. The hydraulic model extended from upstream of the study area, the South Zone industrial estate in Vila-real, to the mouth of the Veo River eastwards in the Mediterranean Sea. Hydraulic simulations were performed for a wide range of flows, from frequent flows to those with very low recurrence over time, in order to cover a wide range of cases (from T2 to T10,000 years).
  • The plots have been classified according to levels of danger, where low levels indicate a greater danger of flooding. They have been defined by applying the PATRICOVA criteria for this purpose and creating new levels of danger because in this case flows of greater magnitude have been studied with respect to the normative ones.

 

In this way, in addition to understanding the hydraulic operation in the study area for different conditions, the frequency of floods and their magnitude in the study area were estimated and to know, in short, the exposure to flooding of the Complex. Finally, some recommendations have been identified that would provide robustness to the study and would allow monitoring over time of the flooding situation of the plots.
