Last Thursday, 12th December, our colleague Jos\u00e9 Manuel Alarc\u00f3n received the Juan Arizo Serrulla Foundation Award: Excellence in Action for his Master\u2019s Final Project in the field of flood risk management and consequence estimation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jos\u00e9 Manuel developed his Master\u2019s Final Project entitled \u201cDevelopment of a Methodology for the Analysis of Social and Economic Consequences of Flooding, Including Dam Failure: Application to a Publicly-Owned Spanish Dam.\u201d The project involved the application and comparison of three methodologies: SUFRI, LifeSim, and a simplified version of LifeSim and its development and application in the case of Spain. These methodologies were implemented using the HEC-FIA and RMC-LifeSim software, taking into account both direct and indirect economic consequences as well as the social impacts resulting from the damage caused by flooding. Additionally, their feasibility and specific applicability to publicly-owned Spanish dams were evaluated through a detailed case study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This award, granted by the Juan Arizo Foundation, aims to promote a spirit of personal improvement, innovation, and originality in academic disciplines related to the planning, design, construction, and operation of civil engineering infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
