{"id":1097,"date":"2018-03-08T09:27:15","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T08:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ipresas.com\/?p=1097"},"modified":"2024-04-01T17:18:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T15:18:35","slug":"ipresas-develops-a-guideline-for-dam-risk-analysis-and-management-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ipresas.com\/en\/ipresas-develops-a-guideline-for-dam-risk-analysis-and-management-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"iPresas develops a guideline for dam risk analysis and management in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><i>These guidelines will become a reference to establish the best safety standards and risk reduction.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>India is the third country in the world with the largest number of dams, after USA and China.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipresas.com\/en\/\">iPresas<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0in collaboration with the Consultancy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.egis-group.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EGIS EAU<\/a>\u00a0(France), is working on the development of a dam risk analysis and management guideline, which will\u00a0<strong>help to boost risk-informed dam safety management in India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This work is part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.damsafety.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DRIP project<\/a>\u00a0<i>(Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project)<\/i>\u00a0managed by the\u00a0<i>Central Water Commission of India<\/i>\u00a0and with the financial assistance of the\u00a0<i>World Bank<\/i>, <strong>to rehabilitate 225 dams within the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These guidelines are part of a set of guidelines\u00a0<\/strong>that contribute to the establishment of the best safety standards, explains Adri\u00e1n Morales, CTO and partner of iPresas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;These guidelines are being prepared<\/strong>\u00a0to support\u00a0dam safety\u00a0management and\u00a0<strong>to guarantee sustainability and operational capacity<\/strong>\u00a0through early identification and rectification of dam safety problems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Adri\u00e1n Morales explains that\u00a0<strong>the focus is on developing a dynamic guideline<\/strong>, which should be updated and reviewed periodically based on advances on knowledge and new techniques, as well as the experience and application of these guideline by end-users.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These guidelines will describe the principles for a common framework for risk-informed\u00a0dam safety management at national scale. In addition, it\u00a0<strong>will include the description of an application example for a pilot case in India<\/strong>&#8220;, he concludes.<\/p>\n<h5><b>India and dam safety<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>Currently,\u00a0<strong>India ranks third worldwide with more than 5,200 large dams<\/strong>\u00a0in operation, thousands of small dams and about 447 under construction.<\/p>\n<p>These infrastructures are vital to ensure water supply and they have an important role in agricultural and rural development.\u00a0<strong>However, dams are aging<\/strong>\u00a0and several structural deficiencies can be found.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, in April 2012, the\u00a0<i>Central Water Commission (CWC<\/i>), under the\u00a0<i>Ministry of Water Resources<\/i>, with the help of the\u00a0<i>World Bank<\/i>, initiated the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.damsafety.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DRIP Project<\/a>.\u00a0The project\u00a0<strong>aims at upgrading and improving operational performance of 223 dams<\/strong>\u00a0located in four states: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. Two thirds of these dams were built between 1935 and 1985, and four of them are more than a hundred years old.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Project Management Unit (CPMU) is responsible for supervising and coordinating the tasks of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.damsafety.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DRIP project<\/a>, to whom Egis EAU (France) provides engineering and management consulting services.<\/p>\n<p>From January 2018 until May 2018,\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipresas.com\/en\/\">iPresas<\/a><\/i>\u00a0will collaborate with EGIS EAU (under a contract with CWC, Ministry of Water Resources of India and the World Bank) to develop these guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Further information on the DRIP project can be found in the following website:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.damsafety.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.damsafety.in\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These guidelines will become a reference to establish the best safety standards and risk reduction.
